Nick Saban on Alabama making CFP: ‘We did our part’

Moments after No. 8 Alabama upset No. 1 Georgia 27-24 on Saturday in the SEC Championship Game, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban made it clear what he thought about his team’s post-season future.

“I guess they wanted to prove to all the naysayers out there that we could do it,” he told CBS right after his team’s win. “I knew at halftime that these guys were going to keep fighting. Our guys showed great perseverance to grind it out and get some great drives to answer when they scored. This is great. I’m so proud of this team. Proud of our players. Proud of our fans. This is great.”

The Crimson Tide ended Georgia’s 29-game winning streak with the win. Iron Bowl hero Jalen Milroe threw a pair of touchdown passes and No. 8 Alabama’s defense dominated much of the way after giving up a score on Georgia’s opening possession.

Talk now shifts to what happens Sunday when the College Football Playoff committee decided which four teams will compete for a national championship.

“That’s not really for me to say,” Saban started to say. “We’re going to enjoy this win. We’ll figured it out tomorrow.”

He then took the opportunity to take a stand.

“We did our part,” Saban said. “We did what we had to do to have a chance.”

Jalen Milroe threw for 193 yards and two scores in the win on 14 of 23 passing.

“Jalen did a great job, especially on the drive where we had to have it,” Saban said. “He made some key plays and made some big plays right before the half. Made some big-time throws right before the half. A couple of fantastic drives because if him.”

Saban re-iterated his CFP point on the podium during the trophy presentation.

“This is a team,” he said. “These guys here are what you call a team. They play together. They respect each other. They work hard. They are responsible. They take responsibility for their own self determination. This is a great team because they play together as a team. The overcome adversity. They persevere. They did it all year. I’ve never been more proud of a group of guys than these guys in terms of what they accomplished tonight.

“Because Georgia has a really good team. They are a great team. Great coaches. But our guys overcome it. They showed today and proves they can win against anybody.”
